Scared Heart Girls College Oakleigh

Learning Support

The aim of the Learning Support Department is to assist students with individual needs to realize their potential within an enriched and inclusive community.

With a flexible and accommodating approach, Learning Support staff work with students so that they take ownership of their learning either within the classroom setting, in small groups or one on one.

A number of students with specific learning, health, physical or emotional issues are on the Literacy, Numeracy and Special Learning Needs (LNSLN) program, while others experience broader challenges in their learning. Transition information, parent advice, formal testing results and teacher and student input are used to identify and monitor the progress of these students. Students on the LNSLN program also have regular Program Support Group meetings so that parents are an integral part of planning and goal setting.

Teaching staff are informed of the individual needs of students and information is maintained and regularly updated. Information includes appropriate strategies to assist teachers in planning curriculum and meeting the needs of our girls.

The Department is staffed by a Learning Support Coordinator, Literacy and Numeracy Coordinators and Teacher Aides. In a team approach, Visiting Teachers for Chronic Health, Hearing and Visual Impairment, Speech Pathologists, Educational Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists from the Catholic Education Office provide expert advice and support. The Learning Support Department also works closely with the VCE and Careers / VET Coordinators to assist individual girls with appropriate pathways.
