Scared Heart Girls College Oakleigh

Mathematics at Sacred Heart Girls’ College is a core study from Years 7-10, with a range of subjects offered in the VCE years to cater for student ability, needs and interests.

We recognise the diverse needs of our girls within Mathematics and respond by offering a range of pathways, support structures and out of class opportunities.

Some of these include:

  • Customised support programs using interactive softwaredesigned to cater for the individual student needs at Years 7 and 8
  • An Acceleration Program for highly able Year 9 students with the opportunity to complete a combined Year 9/10 Mathematics curriculum within one year. Students may then study Units 1 and 2 Mathematical Methods in Year 10 and continue with the VCE Mathematics Units of their choice in Years 11 and 12
  • Smaller class sizes in Years 7 - 9 to provide students with more individualised opportunities and support
  • A Year 10 Mathematics curriculum which provides students with an introduction to the type of Mathematics they may choose to study at VCE level
  • Technology is integrated into the Mathematics curriculum at all year levels. The TI – NSpire Computer Algebra System handheld tool is introduced to students at the Year 9 level
  • A Numeracy Support Program which reinforces concepts taught in the classroom on an individual basis
  • Mathematics Study Club for students in Years 7 – 10
  • Weekly tutorials for each VCE Mathematics subject

Students also participate in a range of Mathematics challenges including: the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad, the University of Melbourne School Mathematics Competition and the Australian Mathematics Competition.

In all, Mathematics at Sacred Heart embraces a wide range of learning and teaching strategies to cater for the needs of all students and to encourage high levels of critical thinking, creativity and problem solving.
