Year 8 Geography Field Trip

The Dandenong Ranges provided a vibrant outdoor classroom for our Year 8 Geography students during their recent excursion on Friday 28 February. The focus of the day was to build an understanding of the intricacies of a temperate rainforest ecosystem.

Under the expert guidance of Park Ranger Julia, students delved into the heart of the forest, learning about the diverse flora and fauna that call it home. Julia shared her extensive knowledge, pointing out unique plants and the subtle signs of animal presence. Students were lucky enough to see some of the tallest moss in the world, the Dawsonia superba.

The core purpose of the excursion was data collection. Students recorded plant species, estimated tree heights and noted animal sightings or tracks. They also used tools to measure temperature, humidity and wind. This experience allowed them to see what they had previously learnt about in class in context. The collected data will form the basis of their upcoming geography assessment, where they will transform their field observations into graphs to gain insight about the Dandenong Ranges' unique environment.
