Indonesian Study Trip

During the Term 3 holidays, eight Indonesian students ranging from Year 9 to Year 11, travelled to Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta to experience the immersive and unique culture of Indonesia.  We had the privilege of spending five days in a homestay with students from Sekola Regina Pacis Jakarta. Their warm hospitality provided us with a unique glimpse into their school and family life. Attending school for three days was a highlight; each day was filled with engaging activities and meaningful conversations, deepening our appreciation for their culture and community.

We participated in various activities such as cooking Indonesian foods, dancing and batik making, which is a special pattern specific to Indonesia. During our time at Regina Pacis, we formed new friendships, ultimately enhancing this great experience. We farewelled our new friends and transferred to the hotel to further explore the city of Jakarta. We spent out last days there going to the National Monument, Thamrin City Trade Mall, Museum MACAN and Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (a place to view traditional structures representing various islands in Indonesia).

We then caught a one-hour flight to Yogyakarta and met our new tour guides for the last few days of the trip. We walked around the bustling and crowded iconic Jalan Malioboro, an iconic shopping street, where we ate dinner and bought more souvenirs. We went to Gereja Ayam which translates to a Chicken Church. It was a unique building filled with prayer rooms for different religions and artworks. The view at the top was scenic and beautiful, and even better we could see our next destination, Borobudur Temple. Borobudur Temple is a Buddhist temple and is a vast structure that took 85 years to build. We climbed 150 steps in the hot sun and reached the top where we enjoyed the reward of another stunning view of the city of Yogyakarta.

On our last day in Indonesia we went to Kotagede or Gede city where we wore traditional Javanese clothing. We also made chocolate flowers at the nearby chocolate factory and viewed silverware that is a popular commodity produced in Gede. We finished our afternoon in Gede with batik-making and headed back to the hotels. The night was enjoyed at Malioboro Mall, with the following day saying goodbye to Yogyakarta and Indonesia, arriving back home the next day.
